About the scholarships: Our first scholarship is the Barbara L. Christen College Scholarship, which is named for Dr. Barbara L. Christen, the founding principal of Murry Bergtraum High School, who established Futures and Options in 1995 in order to provide professional internships and work readiness training for New York City high school students.
Our second scholarship is the Patricia S. Machir Scholarship, in honor of Patricia S. Machir, Executive Director of Futures and Options from 2007 to 2021, whose vision, leadership and commitment to higher education helped to bring career development opportunities to thousands of New York City high school students.
Both awards are $10,000 college scholarships that will be distributed over four years ($2,500 per year) to two current high school seniors who will enter college in the fall of 2023.
- To be eligible to apply for these scholarships, students must have successfully completed a Futures and Options program (Career Essentials, the Externship Experience, the Futures and Options Internship Program which includes Futures Academy, or any of our school-based programs), and demonstrate the need for financial assistance to attend college
- Student must have a high school cumulative GPA of 85% or higher as of June 2022
- Will attend a four year college in the fall of 2023
- Be available and fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to attend Futures and Options' annual gala, Dream Big – A Celebration of Opportunity, which will be held at The Plaza Hotel on Thursday, October 20, 2022
The application for this year is closed and will reopen next year for the high school class of 2024.
