Career Essentials

Career Essentials

Students in the Futures and Options Career Essentials Program participate in 10 supervised workshops that focus on communication, presentation and workplace etiquette skills. Career Essentials is open to any high school student who resides in the five boroughs of New York City. Students have the opportunity to network with and learn from fellow peers from different boroughs and schools.

In order to enroll in the program, interested students must complete an online application and attend a required orientation session either virtually or at our office. Interested students should provide an email address that they check regularly on the application.

Key Components of Career Essentials

Career Essentials workshops are held once a week for two hours. The program runs during the fall semester and again during the spring semester.  Participants in the program learn interviewing skills, presentation skills, workplace etiquette, time management, resume writing, and have the opportunity to explore careers.  Two career exploration field trips are included to offer students exposure to different career options.  Students work in teams on a Create-A-Company project, through which they develop companies complete with mission statements, staffing plans, and marketing strategies. Teams present their companies during the final workshops.

Student Responsibilities

Students are required to attend and be on time to all workshops and events that are part of the program.  It is important to communicate in advance with the Futures and Options program staff if you have any schedule conflicts.
