A Comprehensive Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Certificate Program
The National Training Program in Contemporary Psychoanalysis (NTP) of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP) is a comprehensive postgraduate psychoanalytic certificate program designed for qualified mental health practitioners throughout the United States and around the world. This program was designed with two groups of candidates in mind:
- Those licensed mental health professionals who live or work in a geographic area where psychoanalytic training is unavailable or inadequate; or
- Because of work or family responsibilities cannot take advantage of a traditionally-structured psychoanalytic institute.
The program provides candidates with the opportunity to study with outstanding clinicians and teachers, many of whom have national and international reputations.
The National Training Program in Contemporary Psychoanalysis is under the administrative umbrella of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP). NIP, dedicated to the training of mental health professionals for over 40 years, is a non-profit educational institution chartered in 1972 by the Board of Regents of the State University of New York. NIP is an equal opportunity organization. Curriculum
Course of Study. This four-year program consists of six courses per year. Most of the courses are scheduled for 3-day weekends and meet at NIP.
Certification. With the completion of all required course work, consultation and personal analysis, the candidate will be considered for certification. Upon the approval of the NTP Training Committee, the Certificate in Contemporary Psychoanalysis will be awarded to the candidate.
Training Expenses. Tuition for the 2016.2017 academic year is $4,922, plus a $75.00 non-refundable application fee. Individual consultation fees are set uniformly at $90 per consultation. Candidates pay the cost of their own psychoanalysis. The hourly fee for personal analysis is set by the candidate and his/her analyst independent of NTP. Telephone and travel expenses are the responsibility of the candidate. NTP, when possible, will arrange for group hotel rates for New York City seminar participants.
Continuing Education. The National Institute for the Psychotherapies is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0018.
The National Institute for the Psychotherapies is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education credits for psychologists. The National Institute for the Psychotherapies maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
This program provides 40-60 credits, based on the curriculum year.
Program Requirements
The requirements of this program include a personal analysis, the conduct of psychoanalytic treatment in consultation with faculty members and coursework over a span of four years. The core of the program involves comprehensive training (didactic and practical) in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Candidates will acquire a background that includes traditional psychoanalytic theory, self psychology, object relations theory, interpersonal psychoanalysis, contemporary relational theory and intersubjectivity.
Individual Consultations. In order to best integrate the complex concepts taught in seminars into your clinical work, candidates work with constultants, who are psychoanalysts approved by and affiliated with NTP. In most cases, consultation is conducted via telephone; candidates are encouraged to meet with their consultant in person when attending training weekends in New York. One individual consultation hour is required each week for a minimum of 40 sessions per year for 3 of the 4 years of training. Two hours per week will be required for a minimum of one year to accumulate the required 200 hours needed for certification. Candidates must work with at least 3 different consulting analysts during the course of their candidacy in the program. It is recommended that all candidates have access to a consultant in their respective states/countries who are informed regarding laws that govern practice int heir individual locales, especially for the management of high risk patients.
Personal Psychoanalysis. A personal psychoanalysis is required of all candidates. Candidates must be in treatment a minimum of two times per week beginning with the first semester of training and continuing through graduation. The candidate's personal analyst must be a graduate for at least five years of a postgraduate psychoanalytic training program or its equivalent AND be approved by the NTP Training Committee. In the event that an appropriate training analyst cannot be found in the candidate's local area, the NTP Training Committee will make alternative arrangements.
Admission Requirements
Training is restricted to those mental health practitioners who are state-licensed to practice psychotherapy. In special instances, applicants with significant achievements in allied fields may also be considered for admission.
Application Procedure
In addition to the completed application form and the $75.00 non-refundable application fee, applicants are required to forward a recent curriculum vitae, all transcripts of graduate and undergraduate education, a copy of the applicant's state license enabling the applicant to practice as a psychotherapist and three letters of recommendation. When all material is received, interviews will be scheduled.

What is the orientation of the program? NTP offers intensive comparative study of psychoanalytic theory and technique, building on a foundation of classical theory, with an emphasis on contemporary relational models including Object Relations, Self Psychology, Intersubjectivity and Interpersonal Psychoanalysis.
What is the class schedule? There are 6 seminars per academic year. Each seminar meets for intensive 3-day weekends (Friday until Sunday), for approximately 21 hours.
What are the individual consultation requirements? Consultations are conducted primarily via telephone with a consulting analyst approved by NTP (see Faculty/Consultants list). One individual consultation hour is required each week for a minimum of 40 sessions per year. During the course of the training period, candidates must be in consultation with a minimum of three different consultants for a total of at least 200 hours.
What is the requirement for personal psychoanalysis? The program requires that the candidate be in treatment a minimum of two times per week (three sessions per week is recommended) with a certified psychoanalyst, who is accredited by a four-year psychoanalytic training program and has five years of subsequent experience. The candidate is free to choose his or her own analyst, who must be approved by the Training Committee.
