Psychodynamic Approaches in Clinical Practice: A One Year Evening Program

The Psychodynamic Approaches in Clinical Practice program is designed specifically for mental health practitioners and educators who want to enhance their clinical knowledge, skill, and competence. The program offers an excellent foundation in psychoanalytic thought, and is useful for those who are considering analytic training in the future.

This program also offers an optional clinical component for qualified practitioners, in which students see patients in the NIP Treatment Center.

Tuesdays, 6:15 pm – 9:00 pm (September through May) 

Program Length
The program includes one year of study, which is comprised of two 15-week semesters

Continuing Education
The National Institute for the Psychotherapies is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0018.

The National Institute for the Psychotherapies is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychoanalysts #Psyan-0004.

The National Institute for the Psychotherapies is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education credits for psychologists. The National Institute for the Psychotherapies maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

In 2017.2018, this program will provide 20 CE contact hours

Tuition for the 2017.2018 year is $2,745.

The application fee is $75.

Curriculum

This program includes two courses which run over both the fall and spring semesters. The courses provide a solid psychoanalytically-informed framework in which to understand and work with patients. Integration of theory and its application is emphasized. Courses are designed to begin to integrate psychoanalytic theory and concepts in practice, enhance clinical skill, and teach clinical techniques tailored to meet practice needs.

Introduction to Psychoanalytic Thought
Traces the development of specific psychoanalytic theories, including classical, object relations, self psychology, and relational perspectives. Emphasis will be placed on its historical and theoretical evolution. Case presentations will be used.

Clinical Practice Applications
Focuses on the application of key psychoanalytic concepts, helping the professional formulate psychodynamically-informed interventions in practice. Emphasis will be placed on developing techniques tailored to meet the clinical needs of the professional working with specific populations. Case presentations are used in this course.

Application & Admissions Process

Admission Criteria
Master's degree level social workers, master's or doctoral-level psychologists, physicians, psychiatric nurses with master's degrees, clergy, CASACs, licensed mental health professionals, and other professionals with experience in psychotherapy

  • 3 letters of recommendation

Once the application and letters of recommendation have been received, the applicant will be asked to participate in an individual admissions interview.

Clinical Component (Optional)

The optional clinical component of the Psychodynamic Approaches in Clinical Practice program is open to students who have had clinical experience and want to further develop their experience as a clinician from a psychoanalytic perspective.  Students who select the clinical component see patients in the NIP Treatment Center for 2 years.

Students are assigned patients from the NIP Treatment Center and see the patients on-site in the NIP offices.

In the second year, students who opt to participate in the clinical component also participate in a weekly case seminar which is both didactic and experiential.  

Admission Criteria
Acceptance to the Psychodynamic Approaches in Clinical Practice program.

Applicants must be licensed. This includes social workers with either an LMSW or a LCSW, as well as licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health practitioners.

Applicants must carry malpractice insurance.

Program Requirements
Students must participate in once weekly individual supervision.

Students must attend once weekly therapy.

Students must see between 2 and 4 patients once weekly.

In the second year, students must participate in a weekly case seminar (20 sessions).

Program Length
Two years; students participate in courses in the spring and fall semesters in the first year and case seminar in the second year; however, patients are seen once weekly on a year-round basis.

Dates & Times When Courses Are Offered
Second year case seminars are held on Tuesday evenings from 6:15 pm to 7:30 pm, for 20 sessions from September 2017 through July 2018.  

Other Requirements for Completing the Program
Students must fulfill all NIP Treatment Center requirements for therapists when seeing patients, including session notes and other paperwork.

Tuition & Fees
Tuition for the 2016.2017 year was $2,654 for the 2nd year.

Supervision Costs
Year 1: $40 per session
Year 2: $50 per session

There is no separate application fee for the clinical component of this program.

Remuneration
Students are remunerated for each patient session that they conduct.  The remuneration fees for this program are: 

Year 1: $9 per session
Year 2: $20 per session
