Ebrahim came to this country three years ago, fleeing the war in Yemen and joining other members of his family. One of his teachers at the High School for Service and Learning at Erasmus, noted that he arrived in her class having taken one year of a two-year English as a Second Language program. Determined to learn English, he memorized 50 new words every day. Now, his teacher wrote, Ebrahim is “fully prepared to meet a college curriculum’s requirements.” Ebrahim, who is third in a class of 140 as well as being class treasurer, says, “I believe that life is a race. The winner is not the person who finishes first, but the person who believes in himself and works hard.” Ebrahim will be attending Colgate, aiming for medical school.
