Nasir

“From the end of seventh grade to now,” he wrote, “I have been doing exceptionally well in school because my mom would love to see my success.” With a GPA of 97 and a transcript showing many honors and AP courses at a challenging high school, Nasir is well prepared to be the first in his family to attend college. In addition to his academic achievements, he has been active in the life of his school, working in the library and playing viola in its symphonic orchestra.

Nasir has other responsibilities as well. He lives with his sister and helps take care of a nephew. He has learned how precious time is, writing, “There is never a time when I am not considering the future.” These days that means thinking about his next major milestone, college. He finds himself both excited and “scared because it's a new environment and I'm not sure how I'll adapt and adjust.” On balance, though, “It gives me something to anticipate. It's like a never-ending bonus. Growing older is a daunting task, but I am confident that I will be prepared for whatever is thrown at me.” 

Nasir will study science in college, with a specific goal. “He has dreams of becoming a teacher with an area of focus in math, physics or chemistry,” his precalculus teacher wrote in his recommendation. “With Nasir’s dedication and personality, he will be a great teacher.”

The teacher/mentor that has made the greatest difference in my life is Ms. Qu (Pre Calc teacher). Ms. Qu was such a down to earth and understanding teacher, and her concern for her students was palpable. Everyone deserves a Ms. Qu in their life.
