When Leonora emigrated from the Dominican Republic four years ago, she enrolled in high school while facing the challenges of learning a new language and country. Her journey was made even more difficult because it took place during the pandemic, and without family support.
Nonetheless, her school counselor and teachers “would comment on her participation in classes and her willingness to push herself to use her new language skills,” adding that despite Leonora’s hardships, “she has remained committed to her academic success.”
Another teacher says that Leonora is “one of the most conscientious and resilient students I’ve taught.” Lenora was her student in a course that was considered “notoriously difficult,” but that did not dissuade her. Instead, this teacher recalled, Leonora could be seen “walking through the hallways with an open journal, studying her notes to take advantage of any free moment.” She’s achieved academically while being an active member of her high school community.
If asked to sum up her key to success, Leonora no doubt would include this word: books.
“I am really passionate about the magical world of books; reading is like a special adventure for me,” she wrote in her essay. “Books tell many different stories, sending you on a fascinating journey to different places and ideas.” She describes authors as “guides in my learning journey” and books as “a safe place where I forget about everything else. I find comfort, ideas and lots of interesting stories that keep my curiosity alive and make me love learning.”
Leonora is looking forward to becoming a veterinarian.
The teachers/mentors that have made the greatest difference in my life are Mr. Hedin Bernard and Ms. Caridad, my English teacher. They have been taking care of me since my first year of high school. I am really thankful to them for always listening to me and supporting me in my journey.
