“Negativity doesn’t define me, but my perspective and actions do,” proudly states Wilbely. She struggled to understand her identity, overcoming challenges that allowed her to uncover her true passions. “I’ve learned that people aren’t responsible for what happens to them, but we are all responsible for what we decide to do.”
And she did a lot.
She received special mention for her printed poem, This is What it Feels Like, in which she explored searching for happiness, finally realizing that she had to find it within herself. She also distinguished herself in film direction, producing a documentary about the Haitian Revolution and Latin America, investigating the issue of colorism.
In moments of relaxation, she enjoys journaling, reading, and listening to music, but not as much as involving herself in community events.
She is driven to pursue a legal career that offers accessible advice for low-income individuals, advocating for justice in immigration and family law. Wilbely discloses that after college, she wants to be an attorney and then a judge. Her college advisor has no doubt that she will and says, “As an eager scholar and one of the tops in her class, Wilbely is the definition of motivation for her peers.”
As President of Student Government, she fought for student needs and an inclusive school environment. She interned in the civil courts in New York City and gained experience in the legal field, which is her passion.
