At the conclusion of the Debating for Democracy (D4D) National Conference in April 2008, Project Pericles asked attending student leaders to return to their campus to educate their classmates and community about important policy issues, form coalitions, organize events, and advocate for their issue with elected officials.
To assist these student leaders, Project Pericles held day-long workshops, called D4D on the Road, at 12 Periclean campuses across the country during the 2008/2009 academic year. Students from all twenty-two Periclean campuses attended the workshops, promoting inter-campus dialogue and collaboration.
The workshops were led by Soapbox Consulting, a Washington DC based organization headed by Christopher Kush, the author of The One-Hour Activist, is a leading provider of training seminars, workshops, and lobby days for many national associations including the American Cancer Society, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the Human Rights Campaign and others. Each workshop attendee received a copy of The One-Hour Activist, which provides advice from elected officials, professional organizers, lobbyists, and journalists on political advocacy.
During the workshops, the nonpartisan independent film 18-in-'08 directed by 19 year-old David Burstein, a sophomore at Haverford College, was shown. The 30-minute film is targeted at 17-24 year olds, many of whom voted for the first time in the 2008 presidential election.
"We are honored to partner with Soapbox Consulting and the 22 Periclean colleges and universities on these important workshops," said David Rippon, the Assistant Director of Project Pericles. "We are confident that these workshops will provide hundreds of people around the country with the skills they will need to influence candidates and elected officials before the election and in the long run."
The workshops were open to students, administrators, faculty, and community members from the 22 Periclean colleges and universities.
